Zambia-information

Zambia is located inland at the middle part of Southern Africa. The neighbouring countries of Zambia are Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mosambik, Malawi and Tanzania.

Map of the location of Zambia

The surface area is about 750 000 km2 with a population of about 11 million. The country is plateau and the vegeation savannah and coarse forest. There is also large swamp areas in Zambia.

Zambia is one of the poorest countries in the world. The economy of the country is dependent on the price of copper. The elimination of foreign debts has improved the economic forecasts. However the high unemployment rate of about 50 % is still complicating the countrys development. Health problems (AIDS, malaria, bad hygiene) are also decreasing the productivity.

Despite the poverty Zambia is full of life. Tens of bantu-tribes live in the country and there is said to be over 70 different languages there. English is spoken in the cities, and the most important tribal languages are nyanja and bemba. People are happy and hospitable. Music and dancing are a central part of the culture. No wonder that many traveling guides say that if you want to see some of the "real Africa", travel to Zambia.
